Woodwork Institute Inspection Policies Overview

Disclaimer: The Institute provides independent inspections but does not guarantee safety, performance, or contract adherence of products or installations, even if they meet North American Architectural Woodwork Standards (NAAWS). Responsibility for addressing non-compliance rests with the contractual parties.

Shop Drawings: Inspections are based on project specifications and NAAWS. Firms must submit two copies of shop drawings, project specifications, and modification approvals. Unapproved changes will be rejected.

Fees: Fees, deposits, and discounts are detailed on the Woodwork Institute website. Non-affiliates pay new inspection fees for failed re-inspections; Accredited Millwork Companies (AMCs) pay for actual inspection time, with a one-hour minimum.

Physical Inspections: Conducted based on architectural plans, specifications, and approved shop drawings. Firms must provide evidence of approved modifications. Unapproved changes are not considered.

Inspection Process: Inspectors operate independently. AMC’s are notified prior to inspections and have 10 days after receiving the report to correct non-compliant findings before the report is published.

Certified Seismic Installation Program (CSIP): Inspects installations but does not guarantee performance. Requirements include in-wall blocking/backing and documentation. Final inspections must be arranged through the Institute.

Monitored Compliance Program (MCP): Inspects products and installations but does not guarantee compliance. Shop drawings must be reviewed, and modifications approved. Inspections occur throughout the project, with certificates issued after passing final inspection.

General Procedures:

Architectural Services Representative perform inspections independently. AMCs can address issues before final report publication. The Institute requires payment of fees and indemnification against claims.
