NAAWS Technical Advisor Position Description

JOB TITLE: North American Architectural Woodwork Standards Technical Editor
REPORTS TO: Association Executives, NAAWS Committee Chair
FLSA STATUS: Volunteer or Independent Contractor
COMPENSATION: $40-50/hr, wage negotiable with increase of responsibilities
LOCATION: Remote

POSITION OVERVIEW:  The Technical Editor will be responsible for reviewing, editing, and formatting content for the North American Architectural Woodwork Standards (NAAWS), ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency.  The Technical Editor will work closely with the NAAWS Committee, subject matter experts and other stakeholders to ensure that the Standard adheres to established guidelines and brand requirements.

COMMUNICATION:  The Technical Editor shall report to the Association Executives of the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada and the Woodwork Institute as well as the North American Architectural Woodwork Standards Chair. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend all NAAWS Committee virtual meetings
  • Review and edit technical content for accuracy, clarity, grammar, punctuation, consistency, and adherence to established standards
  • Ensure NAAWS is written in a clear and concise manner, with appropriate language and tone for the target audience
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and consistency of documentation.
  • Verify and validate technical information and data
  • Review and edit diagrams, illustrations, and other visual elements
  • Review NAAWS suggestions, explain the impact proposed changes may have to other sections of the standard, present recommended errata changes
  • Track suggestion actions, including errata, rewrite NAAWS text according to errata suggestions
  • Communicate errata changes to Copy Editor
  • Track changes from previous edition to current edition
  • Meet with Associations Executives on a quarterly basis or as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each responsibility and essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Strong proficiency in English grammar, punctuation, and style
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in editing and proofreading
  • Experience with documentation tools and software, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of woodworking and construction concepts, terminology, and documentation practices
  • Fabrication, installation experience, and industry knowledge required
  • Experience with technical documentation for hardware, software, or cloud-based products is a plus

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, or related field; Minimum of 3 years of experience in technical writing or technical editing, preferably in a technology or engineering environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
